Why Cats Love Boxes

Why Cats Love Boxes

Every cat lover knows the scene: you buy a nice new toy or bed, but your cat prefers to crawl into the box it came in. It seems funny, but there's a clear reason behind this behavior. Cats love boxes because they offer safety, warmth, and peace.

Boxes provide a sense of security

Cats are natural hunters, but they're also prey animals. This means they like to be in places where they feel safe and have an overview. A cardboard box offers just that. The walls of the box provide protection, while the open top allows for a view of the surroundings.

A box offers a cat a place to hide, observe, and relax. It's a private space free from distractions and threats, ideal for unwinding.

Warmth and comfort

Cats naturally seek out warm places. Cardboard insulates well and retains heat, making it feel cozy inside a box. This is a major advantage, especially for cats that sleep a lot (an average of 14 to 16 hours a day).

A box is also soft and comfortable, especially with a blanket or cushion inside. You can easily create a nice resting place with a small cat cushion.

Playing and hunting

Besides being a resting place, a box is also an excellent play area. The limited view makes it exciting: any movement outside the box triggers the predatory instinct. Cats enjoy lurking, pouncing, or hiding from inside a box.

So a box combines three instincts at once: resting, hiding and hunting.

Stress reduction in cats

Research shows that cats with access to hiding places, such as boxes or scratching posts, adapt to new environments more quickly and exhibit less stress. A box serves as a safe zone where a cat can retreat if something changes in the home.

A closed scratching post or a small wooden play box with balls can have the same effect: it offers shelter and challenge at the same time.

Turn a box into something lasting

Want your cat to keep their favorite spot, but prefer something more stylish than a cardboard box in the living room? Then choose a beautiful piece of cat furniture with the same qualities: shelter, warmth, and tranquility. Consider a compact scratching post with a soft interior or a wooden cat toy that complements your home's decor.
